It's easy too see why they would make the decision to keep the game progress a secret, and why they just keep mentioning it without actually spoiling anything about it. They didn't want the demo to spoil anything, hence why the demo ended up being a completely different thing. The stanley parable we all know and love took longer to complete as both Davey and William agreed that the game needed to feel special and different, while at the same time it needed to stay the exact same. And they mainly want to foccus on making it without other people pushing them into anything. Maybe the trolls are only there to remind people that the game IS infact coming, they don't want people to forget about it, but at the same time they don't want it getting 'TOO much attention'.
